The purposes of the Satellite Survey of the Theban Necropolis are: (1) to gather new and revised mapping data on the Theban private tombs by recording and processing differentially corrected GPS coordinates for each; (2) to locate and record the coordinates of tombs inaccessible to satellite photography; (3) to map the locations of newly uncovered tombs; (4) to confirm the identifications and locations of tombs that are problematical, misidentified or ambiguous; (5) to make digital photographic images of the exteriors of the tombs; (6) to load the GPS data and digital imagery into the satellite map and geographical information system database (GIS) that have been prepared for this purpose by the University of Charleston On-line GIS for the Theban Necropolis.
