Geospatial Institute for Students and Teachers in Climate Change
The Geospatial Institute for Students and Teachers in Climate Change addresses NASA's goals through an investigative, collaborative and educational approach to examining southeastern climate change impacts. The Institute will serve as an immersive and integrated multidisciplinary exposure and training for students with various backgrounds and career aspirations, specifically those centered on climate change-related geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and education.

Collage of images from NASA researchFaculty at member institutions may apply to host a GIST-CC site focused on NASA's current research priority in climate change. Although the program is an eight-week summer program, the GIST-CC Sites should host 5-week research opportunities that have direct relevance to NASA and MUST incorporate remotely sensed and/or GIS data. The students will be involved in an introductory session at the College of Charleston's Santee Cooper GIS Laboratory for the beginning 3 weeks, integrating climate change and GIS/remote sensing content, and then a finale ceremony at the end. The SCSGC GIST-CC will enable faculty at colleges throughout South Carolina to immerse students in "hands on" learning experiences while working on NASA-related research. As is true of all SCSGC Programs, minority participation is encouraged.

  • Biological Impacts, specifically looking at Species Diversity on Hammock Islands, from Sea Level Rise
  • Charleston Weather as a Result of Climate Change
  • Drought and Fire Conditions in South Carolina as a Result of Changing Temperature and Precipitation
  • Dust and Aerosol Pollution across Charleston Peninsula
  • Cloud Coverage as an indicator of Regional Climate Change
