NASA Student Internships

General Information

The SCSGC may provide support for qualified students to participate in various research and internship programs offered by NASA's Centers, such as: the NASA Academy programs, The Undergraduate Research Program (USRP) at Langley, Langley's LARSS program, ESMD programs, JPL Internships or independent research projects at NASA Centers. These programs enable undergraduate students to work for 10 weeks on-site at a NASA Center with a mentor. The programs are designed for technically oriented students with an interest in gaining knowledge, awareness and a greater appreciation for research activities and its affects in the real world. These internship supplements will be used to support a student's work and/or to supplement travel expenses to a NASA Center. The amount of the student stipend award depends upon the program for which the student is accepted. The actual stipend amounts are determined by each program and Center.

Application Requirements
Please be aware that in order to receive funding, you MUST apply for the NASA internship through them as well as apply for funding through the SC Space Grant!

You must be selected for your NASA internship program by that program's admissions committee to receive award funding. You MUST apply to us for FUNDING for your internship stipend. Acceptance into a NASA center internship program does not guarantee SC Space Grant Consortium funding for your travel and stipend.

Eligibility
Students must:
  1. Have applied or have been accepted into a NASA Center internship program;
  2. Be a citizen of the United States
  3. Attend a consortium member institution or educational partner
  4. Have sponsorship from a faculty advisor
  5. Be a rising junior or senior
  6. Have an interest in aerospace and space related studies. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the basic sciences, science education, astronomy, planetary science, environmental studies, engineering, fine arts, and journalism

Reporting Requirements
  • SC Space Grant Awardees are required to submit a final report of their research activities at the end of the academic year.
  • SC Space Grant Awardees are required to present their work at a research symposium or conference.
  • If selected to participate in this program you agree to participate in the South Carolina Space Grant Longitudinal Tracking program that is designed to monitor student progress from award through first employment.
Obligation to the Government
While students who receive support through the National Space Grant Program do not incur any formal obligations to the government of the United States, the objectives of the program clearly will be best served if graduates from the program pursue further study or careers in science, technology, and engineering fields and support areas. *As required by NASA, all awardees will be tracked through their first year of employment.
